Summary

The Austral Group recognizes safety and risk management as a fundamental duty and cornerstone of our value proposition and a core responsibility to our clients. As Risk Management Director you will lead the Company’s safety and risk management strategy and operations, ensuring the safety and security of our clients and staff, building an industry-leading risk management practice and forming effective partnerships with our demanding global client base. You will also play a key role in the Company’s safe expansion to new geographies.


You will act as principal owner of Austral Group’s safety and risk management framework (i. supplier and activity selection, ii. role clarity, iii. situation management, and iv. insurance) and will align our company and its stakeholders around this framework while keeping our trips fun and academically fulfilling.

Austral Group Risk Management provides services to anticipate, mitigate and manage risk, and effectively and efficiently respond to safety and security incidents and emergencies.

Our approach is both proactive and reactive. As proactive partners in our clients’ global endeavors, we provide consultation, risk assessment, and jointly strategize to enable clients to travel safely and to meet their international and academic goals. When necessary to react to an incident, Austral Group works directly with our clients, partners, providers, staff and other stakeholders to help mitigate risks and manage emergencies.


This role is based in Santiago, Chile.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership:

  • Facilitate the continuing development, implementation and monitoring of risk management processes in Austral Group.
  • Develop scalable frameworks and practices to serve the Company’s needs today and through future growth.
  • Help Austral build an industry-leading risk management practice, incorporating new knowledge from outside the Company while leveraging existing processes and experiences.

Programs and Destinations:

  • Research and monitor ongoing global events and provide political, security and health risk assessments to determine impact on and recommendations for Austral Group programs.
  • Conduct risk assessments for each Austral Group trip to analyze current and/or potential risks.
  • Coordinate and implement health and safety measures across all Austral Group destination countries. Build risk profiles, assess challenges and viability to expand into new destinations.
  • Oversee the vetting and documentation process of all transportation, accommodation, excursions and special activities providers.
  • Oversee all Travel Assistance Provider services.

Planning and Reporting:

  • Prepare risk management and insurance budgets.
  • Deliver risk reports as necessary to a variety of audiences including senior management and Board of Directors.
  • Oversee the Company’s insurance program and policies, maintaining records of policies and claims.

Response:

  • Coordinate responses to serious incidents and crises, construct backup plans, contingencies and next steps, contact and coordinate travel assistance.
    • o Lead communications with the client, company and other stakeholders
    • o Be on-site as required
    • o Prepare drills and dry runs to test and teach response strategies to diverse types of incidents

    Training and Awareness:

    • Create and lead ongoing training programs for Company staff
      • o Build procedures for measuring staff compliance

      Desired Skills and Qualifications

      • Bachelor's degree and professional experience in a relevant context (e.g. international travel risk analysis, international program management, crisis management, etc.)
      • Strong subject matter knowledge pertaining to risk management
      • Demonstrated experience managing shifting priorities and time-sensitive deadlines
      • Solid planning and organizational skills
      • Tact, judgment and confident decision-making
      • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to influence
      • Experience developing and managing budgets
      • Ability to motivate others and effectively train/teach
      • Ability to travel throughout Austral Group’s current and future destinations
